Catherine Newman joined the Egremont team back in June 2021, we asked her what her first impressions of Egremont were…
Starting a new job is rarely easy. Starting a new career entirely remotely lends further layers of complexity. My experience of joining Egremont Group is, therefore, testament to the helpful, close-knit, and supremely efficient team at its heart. I joined the eg team as an intern in March of 2021 and have since worked as an analyst supporting projects in the water and retail sectors.
training
Although I had some experience of consulting in the cultural sector, managing business transformation requires a whole new set of skills. As part of my induction, Egremont provided comprehensive training sessions and helpful information packs on core aspects of consulting. I’ve loved the opportunity to grow my knowledge in regular ‘consulting masterclass’ sessions. These ongoing events allow Egremont consultants to share knowledge and collectively develop our consulting toolkit.
I’ve also had plenty of opportunities to apply core skills in a practical setting. I work with consultant-client teams to conduct pilot and hothouse projects, helping to foster collaboration and efficiency across joint teams. I love working closely with clients and consultants at all levels. Joint team members bring a wealth of expertise to our projects, so there’s always something new to learn through collaborating with them. Working with people who are passionate about shaping change is one of the best parts of my role.
One of the key aspects of consulting that I didn’t anticipate before I started working at Egremont is the broad variety of tasks required for business transformation. Consulting rarely gives you the same challenges from day to day, and to support change, consultants need to adapt to the needs of the project. This means that on any given day, I could be researching, doing statistical analysis, meeting with analytics teams to discuss data and systems, or helping deliver sessions on effective meeting management. When I first joined project teams, I learnt how flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills are key to successful consulting.
how I got the job
I transitioned to the job after working for a company providing financial consultancy for schools. I was looking for a position that combined a requirement for analytical skills that I used in preparing budgetary reports and a need for creative thinking. I enjoyed developing original perspectives on complex issues when working on my English degrees and wanted to develop these skills in any new role.
mentorship
After seeing a position advertised at Egremont, I applied hoping to learn more about management consulting. Conversations during interviews helped me realise what a great fit it would be. The selection process included an interview, a task, and chats with both a current consultant who had joined as an intern and Sean, the CEO. It was great to speak with someone who started their career in the same position I was applying for and learn about their path into management consultancy.
When I started the job, I was assigned a buddy to help me grow into my role and continue to benefit from the mentorship of my manager, who helped me find opportunities to grow my skills and experience. I’ve especially appreciated the active and supportive feedback culture at Egremont. Hearing about my performance on projects in terms of what I did well as well as identifying areas for me to develop helped me build my confidence, especially when I first started.
joining Egremont
Egremont Group has been a fantastic place to step into management consulting. Despite the challenges of joining the company in March of 2021, the past five months have flown by! I found that the friendly team and extensive training opportunities were key to helping me meet the challenges of the fast-paced work of consulting.
